A classic Swiss steak recipe with tender beef smothered in a rich tomato sauce.

  • 2 lbs round steak, cut into serving pieces
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • 2 tbsp vegetable oil
  • 1 large onion, sliced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 can (14.5 oz) diced tomatoes
  • 1 cup beef broth
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tsp paprika
  • 1 bay leaf

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 325°F (165°C).
  2. Combine flour, salt, and pepper in a shallow dish.
  3. Dredge steak pieces in the flour mixture.
  4. Heat oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat.
  5. Brown steak on both sides, then remove from the skillet.
  6. Add onion and garlic to the skillet, sauté until softened.
  7. Stir in tomatoes, beef broth, Worcestershire sauce, paprika, and bay leaf.
  8. Return steak to the skillet, cover, and bake for 1.5–2 hours until tender.

Notes

  • For extra tenderness, pound the steak before cooking.
  • Serve with mashed potatoes or rice.
  • Leftovers taste even better the next day.
